![]() It was really Don Meredith then and Bob Hayes that lit up the NFL from 1965 to 1969. Make sure you understood when Bob Hayes was running a route, that you better get rid of the ball in a quick manner. So you had to get rid of the ball quicker. When you're out there throwing to him, at first I thought I was overthrowing him, and ended up underthrowing him. ![]() We had these great receivers and we also had Bob Hayes. We had Gale Sayers, Dick Butkus, Jack Snow. So we were in the college all-star game together. And Bob was just a football player, but he was noted for his exploits on the track and also his gold medal. And I guess Gil Brandt had an idea that we could both play some day. And Bob and I were both drafted as futures in 1964. And I played in a game that was up in Chicago. It seems like yesterday, but I was an Ensign in the Navy. It's been fun for me to have the honor that was bestowed on me to just speak just a few words on behalf of Bob, his family, on behalf of the Dallas Cowboys, his teammates and friends. Some of the most significant battles of World War I that Austria-Hungary participated in included: The Serbian Front was fought along the southern border of the Austro-Hungarian Empire and the Eastern Front was fought on the eastern border against Russia.Īs stated above, Austro-Hungarian forces participated in many battles of World War I. As such, many of the battles that Austria-Hungary and Italy participated in occurred on mountain ranges and in valleys. The terrain of the region was very mountainous. At the time, Italy wanted to gain control over sections of the region due to a rising sense of nationalism. Whereas the Italian Front was along the border between Italy and Austria-Hungary. For instance, the Western Front was located on the western-half of Europe and included a line of trenches that stretched throughout much of northern France and Belgium. In general, the landscape of Europe in World War I was divided into a few different ‘fronts’. For example, the multi-ethnic nature of the army created division within the ranks and made it more difficult for the commanders to organize and disperse the troops into battle.Īustria-Hungary was one of the main forces that participated in the battles of World War I, but they were primarily active on the Italian Front (also known as the Alpine Front), Serbian Front and the Eastern Front. This created major issues for not only the empire and leadership of Emperor Franz Joseph I, but also for the armed forces. Not only was Austria-Hungary an empire based on two separate nations, that existed in a uncertain union, but it was also a multi-ethnic empire with almost a dozen different cultures and languages represented among its people. These issues were worsened by the multi-ethnic nature of the Austro-Hungarian Army. For example, at the start of World War I, Austria-Hungary had one of the smallest air forces in all of Europe and was much further behind its European rivals in terms of military equipment, such as artillery. As such, Austria-Hungary’s army struggled in many of its most important conflicts. In fact, the empire struggled to adequately supply and prepare its military forces before and during World War I. When Austria-Hungary entered the fighting of World War I in 1914, it had one of the least developed and prepared armies in all of Europe. ![]() It was and still is never about the purported age of the pieces but whether they were fashioned during the apogee of a culture or simply by women of high talent fueled by their dreams. It is these textiles in Dallas through the decades that have received the highest accolades. The DMA's repertoire, owing to the era in which these weavings were collected, meant that the condition and the impact of near-pristine or the pristine quality of the cloths became pro forma. Pieces that were too worn or damaged, or overly abstract, plain, or dominated by Indian, Arabian, or European themes or motifs, while perhaps wonderful, were of far less interest and rarely included in the museum's collection. The originality and the continual reinterpretation of potent and meaningful motifs by talented women intrigued me. Rather, it focuses on emblematic pieces with pictorial elements from primary local weaving traditions that had been handed down through multiple generations. The DMA's collection is neither topographical nor broad in terms of repetitive examples, nor does it dwell upon the technical nomenclature of weaving and textile arts. Still, I was looking for iconic works that praised the ancestors and were in harmony with my own sense of connoisseurship.
